Mirror Mirror on the wall, who's the greenest of them all?

We get a lot of questions regarding Ready Selfie Go, aka 27 Rosiers’ highly effective hydrating face mask. Some of you ask if 10 minutes really offer significant results. Some of you wonder how we’ve achieved such a buoyant shade of green.

Rules of clean beauty

We could say it’s our very own brand of Green Magic, we could tell you the tale of the many herbs we’ve travelled to pick across the world. We could. Except that… the rules of clean beauty, like those of clean living, require disclosure, and a commitment to the exercise of transparency. That, and ingredients that are safe, for you, for the world. That, and products that are free of… all the crap you find in so many skincare products. And yet, the goal is to bring you products that offer true, measurable impacts. So… clean beauty, in our book, means respectful, safe AND effective. That’s what led us to using Super-Ingredients.

Purifying, detoxing, antioxidative: the benefits of Spirulina

In our recent Halloween post, we jokingly featured Ready Selfie Go. It got us thinking… Why did we choose Spirulina as one of our 27 Rosiers super-ingredients? We went back to our research, which is what we want to share with you now.

Spirulina has become a must-be ingredient, not just in one of our products, but more generally in our lives. If it’s greener than green, it’s thanks to the chlorophyll it contains. Its potent action makes it a one-of-a-kind staple both in food and beauty supplements, and its powerful detox and regenerating powers are why our Fresh Face Instant Mask has become one of our star products.

For those of you maybe unsure of what Spirulina might be…: Spirulina is a blue-green algae, and one of the earliest forms of life on Earth. Originating from the depths of the ocean, it dates back some 3.8 billion years. Its name refers to its spiral shape, though some varieties of spirulina are, in fact, straight. Spirulina is a complex creature, one that contains, among other wonderful things, carbohydrates, proteins, fatty acids, minerals and vitamins and… chlorophyll.

The power of cholorophyll

At 27 Rosiers, we believe beauty starts within. Why are we told to eat our greens? Because they contain chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is commonly referred to as “the green blood”, because its chemical structure is similar to human hemoglobin, which carries oxygen around a person's body and oxygenate its cells, the difference being that chlorophyll transports magnesium atoms instead of iron. Plants use chlorophyll, along with sunlight, to get their nutrients. And so should we.
Especially since we can’t just bask in the sun, in photosynthesis mode, hands in the air, listening to the birds and watching the clouds dance above our leaves.

The benefits of Spirulina and Chlorella

Great sources of chlorophyll are alfalfa, spinach, collard greens, wheatgrass, macha, broccoli, parsley and other delicious herbs, as well as, you got it, spirulina. Quick side note, if you’ll bear with us: another super-ingredient, which has recently been studied extensively, is chlorella, one of the active ingredients in our beauty supplement Gutta Move On. Ingested, chlorophyll detoxes the intestinal system, helps fight inflammations…

But let’s keep our focus on Spirulina - which also boasts anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits. There’s so many virtues found in recent studies across the globe that it’s hard to take it all in. Overall, this algae has major anti-asthenic properties. “Uh, ok, and what does that mean?” you ask (rightly so). Asthenia means “lack or loss of strength”. To put it simply, because of its properties, Spirulina boosts and protects the immune system, has interesting anti-microbial and anti-viral effects, with evidence of impact on number of viruses. Starting with the common cold. We could go on and on, and tell you about the way it helps regulate your appetite, gives you energy, or how, as mindbodygreen.com explains it so well, Spirulina practically overflows with nutrients that are essential to keeping our bodies functioning the way they're supposed to.

Why use Spirulina in skincare?

What we will share with you in this post is that we (Kevin & Stephanie and everyone in the 27 Rosiers team) have added Spirulina to our yearly regimen, alternating with other super-ingredients. What next? Well, it just so happens that in several of the studies we stumbled upon, we discovered that Spirulina also boasts moisturizing, nourishing, mineralizing, restructuring and antioxidant properties, making it a highly recommended active ingredient for skincare products. It’s amazing for dry, damaged or stressed skin, hands, eye contour and for after-sun. And that’s how we got even more interested in this super-green greener than green ingredient.

Now you know. For those of you who already use Ready Selfie Go, you’ve seen what a difference 10 minutes can mean to your face. You’ve experienced how easy it is to apply, and how great your skin feels in the days after you’ve used it.

For those of you wondering if it’s worth trying yet another face mask… Trust us. It is. We’ve put it to the test. Your skin will feel so comfortable, so supple, you’ll want to put it on every day. Which you could. After all, we can all spare 10 minutes a day. But once or twice a week is all you need. Well, that, and a little love, bien-sûr!
